Character Notes
- Nellie Forbush
- Naïve US Navy nurse. Confident, bubbly, compassionate. She loves Emile but cannot accept that he had a native wife and children.
- Playing age 25 – 35.
- Audition score page 20 & 21, and page 70 & 71.
- Emile de Becque
- Serious, calm nature, middle-aged plantation owner. Has a mystery past.
- Playing age 45 – 60. French, must speak with a slight accent .
- Audition score page 26 & 27, and page 148 & 149.
- Bloody Mary
- Loud, brash Polynesian. Rather shady – she will sell anything, including her own daughter, to anyone.
- Playing age 40+
- Audition score page 47 & 48.
- Luther Billis
- An ‘entrepreneur’ in the loosest sense, able to talk his way out of trouble. Loud and scruffy, a chancer.
- Playing age 30 – 40
- Audition score page 35; 36 & 37.
- Lt. Cable
- The clean-cut all-American hero! Brave and handsome.
- Playing age 25 – 30
- Audition score page 53, and page 94, 95, 96.
- Cpt Brackett
- Officer in charge. Commanding, authoritative.
- Playing age 50 - 60
- Commander Harbison
- Second in command. Sharply spoken, clipped sentences – very much a ‘Navy’ man.
- Playing age 45 - 60
- Ngana / Jerome
- Boy and girl – age range 7 – 11
- Dark-haired, need to sing. Appear in first and final scenes.

- Henry
- Emile’s man-servant. Playing age 50+. Speaks in French. First scene only
- Could then join chorus.
- Liat
- Teenage pretty Polynesian girl. Non-singing, has only a few lines to say. No audition, but speak to Diane if interested
